Montreal Roller Derby always has a few referee and official positions to fill. Here's a breakdown of all possible Staff positions:
Referees - Pack Referee: The pack referee focuses on giving penalties to blockers.
- Jammer Referee: The jammer referee focuses on counting score and giving penalties to a team's jammer.
Officials - Jam Timer: Signals the jam start and end, keeps track of the time during the jam. Also keeps track of timeouts and reviews taken by both teams.
- Scorekeeper: Receives score updates from the jammer referee, calculates totals, communicates with the scoreboard operator.
- Penalty Tracker: Compiles a list of all penalties given, informs referees of players that should go to the penalty box or be ejected for the period.
- Whiteboard Official: Updates whiteboards (on the outside or inside) with current penalty information.
- Lineups Tracker: Keeps track of who lines up for each team for every jam.
- Actions Tracker: Keeps track of all defensive and offensive actions taken by blockers.
- Scoreboard Operator: Updates the scoreboard.
- Penalty Box Official: Manages the penalty box, keeps track of the time left on penalties and releases players when appropriate.
All Official positions are off-skates, while Referee positions are on-skates. If you wish to join us as a referee, you may be limited to Official positions until you've progressed sufficiently in your Referee training.
All positions require presence at some of our home games (a few Saturday nights during the spring and summer), while presence at practice is pretty flexible: - Most Official positions can be learned in a few minutes and require little practice to execute them passably.
- Some Official positions require a little practice involvement; at least one practice per month.
- Referee positions require substantial training and learning; at least two practices per month (we suggest more for trainees).
You can find the exact schedule in the Agenda section of this site - look for events names 'League Practice' or 'Scrimmage Practice' on the Internal Calendar. Specific team practices are open to Staff members, but no material will be covered then. The practice venue can be found within that agenda by clicking on the specific events. Most practices are held at La Récréathèque in Laval.
If you are still interested in joining us, please fill out the form below or simply show up to a Tuesday night league practice and introduce yourself!
